The state of Victoria in Australia is in the southern end of the country. It borders the state of New South Wales and is separated from this state by the Murray River. The state takes a triangular like shape. Its capital is Melbourne. Being at the lowest south end of Australia, the state experiences the chilliest winters in the country.

Towns and Cities

Some of the major areas and destinations in the state of Victoria are provided below;

*Mornington Peninsula - Is a tourist city in Victoria. The city has a lot of entertainment activities including golfing, theme parks, restaurants and cafes and is known for its lovely sun and leisure atmosphere.

*Melbourne - This is Australia's second largest city and is home to various tourist attractions including Docklands, Southgate, Federation Square, Queen Victoria Market and the Eureka Tower. The city also has many museums including the Police Museum, Shrine of Remembrance, Immigration museum, Melbourne Museum and the Old Melbourne Jail. The city has various zoos, theme parks, shopping malls and natural scenes.

*Wodonga - Also referred to as the Albury-Wodonga, it is a twin city that is located along the shores of Murray River. The twin city is booming with activity and is popular as a stop over while traveling on road between Melbourne and Sydney. Some attractions in these cities include Botanic Gardens, Rutherglen Victoria and the gourmet area surrounding Beechworth.

*Ballarat - Ballarat is located 110 kilometers to the north of Melbourne.The city is known for the Goldfields and the deserted gold mines of Eureka. Some attractions in this city include the Ballarat Botanical Gardens, Lake Wendouree, Ballarat Wildlife Park and the Kryal Castle.

Tourist Attractions

Some of the major tourist attractions that you can visit while on holiday in Victoria include the Great Ocean road that runs along the beach, Alpine Regions and open vast lands at the central regions of the state, the Mornington Peninsula, Dandenong Ranges including vast tropical forests, Lower Glenelg and Grampians National Park, Murray river reserves, Ararat and the Phillip Island.

General Tourist Information

The Tullamarine Airport in Melbourne is the main international airport that services the state of Victoria. The airport is about 24 kilometers from the city center. The airport has flights from many European and American Destinations. It also services local flights to other cities within Australia. Another major airport in Victoria is the Avalon airport situated 23 kilometers off Geelong, the second largest city in Victoria. The airport however serves only local budget airlines.
