Investing in an
annual travel insurance policy is highly important, particularly if you plan to visit several places over the course of the next 12 months. However it can be difficult to know which is the right policy for you, given the wide range of choices on offer; but there are a few key things you can keep in mind to ensure you pick the right policy.
Firstly, consider what types of trips you will be taking throughout the year. For example, will they be mostly lying at the beach, soaking up the rays-type holidays? Or will you turn action man (or woman), shooting the breeze on the slopes and riding through the hills on a mountain bike?
If it's the latter, you should definitely consider taking out specialist sports insurance in addition to regular travel insurance. This can come in the form of a separate policy, or as a host of added extras onto the main policy.
If you intend to going skiing, many accidents which occur on piste (on the slopes) could potentially not be covered, so it's important to read the small print fully and more than once, to gain a full understanding of what you're paying for. The same goes if you intend to go snowboarding, or any other high-action sports.
Secondly, consider your age. If you are over 65, some insurers may refuse to provide you with a policy, as you may be more likely to make a claim in the future. This is generally due to the increased likelihood of someone older falling ill and requiring treatment.
Some specialist insurers will provide specific insurance for over 65s, at a reasonable price. Be sure to shop around though, as some may attempt to charge high premiums.
Lastly, think about any pre-existing medical conditions you may have. If you do suffer from an existing predilection, by not declaring it to your insurer, you could end up unprotected at the worst possible time. Be sure to declare any conditions and to shop around, as again, insurers may attempt to charge an unreasonably large premium.
