Holiday Diarrhoea In Tunisia

By:

Holiday diarrhoea or travellers diarrhoea in Tunisia can often be put down to very poor standards of health and hygiene in holiday hotels.

Holidaymakers who have stayed at all inclusive holiday hotels in Tunisia, have complained of dirty restaurants, inedible food and poor general standards of hygiene, which often results in food poisoning and gastric illness.

If you become ill on holiday abroad, it can ruin your holiday and also prove costly, as medication and doctors visits are expensive.

One of the most common forms of holiday sickness in Tunisia is food poisoning, and careful handling of food is essential to prevent outbreaks of holiday illness.

Food handlers should always:

Clean chopping boards between use with different foods.
Regularly clean down kitchen surfaces.
Wash kitchen utensils with hot, soapy water.
Store raw meat separately from cooked meats.
Clean hands with soap and hot water between preparing foods and after using the toilet.
Keep hair covered.
Store and cook food at the proper temperatures

Cross contamination can occur in Tunisia, when the same chopping boards are used for different foods, without being washed in between. Foods can be high risk include eggs, poultry, mince products, including burgers, seafood and ice cream. All inclusive buffets may get contaminated if food is left out uncovered, or if the food is reheated day after day. Only eat meat from a barbecue which is cooked thoroughly, as undercooked chicken and burgers are a major source of food poisoning. Salads should also be kept chilled, and all foods should be covered when being served.

Tour operators must not expose holidaymakers to food poisoning and holiday illness in Tunisia, or at any other holiday resort worldwide, and you should always make a complaint to the holiday representative in your hotel if your illness is linked to unacceptable standards of health and hygiene.

If you and other hotel guests become ill after eating the same food, keep a note of their contact details, in case you want to bring a case for compensation against the tour operator when you arrive home.
