Hiring An Attorney Or Lawyer In Bangkok Thailand

By:

Bangkok Thailand is truly an international city. Once heralded as the "Venice of the East," Bangkok's seemingly infinite number of canals combined with the easygoing nature of the locals still hearkens back to another era. Many people come to Bangkok or Thailand for vacation while others seek to live in Bangkok for a long period of time or, if not, indefinitely.

As happens anywhere in the world, issues arise that demand legal expertise. The need for competent legal advice is enhanced by the fact that most foreigners, either resident or visiting Thailand, do not have a firm technical grasp of the Thai language. A lawyer in Bangkok may be able to aid a non-Thai client with many kinds of matters (both legal and administrative) should they arise in Bangkok or Thailand as a whole. Lawyers in Bangkok, primarily by reason of geographical location, can effectively liaise with government ministries in the capital: Bangkok. Bangkok, as Thailand's capital and center of administration, is the focal point of Thai government offices and foreign diplomatic legations and posts.

Many multi-jurisdictional business concerns maintain a presence in Bangkok. A Bangkok lawyer will have a unique depth of knowledge about how to get things done in the Thai capital city. Once it has been decided that a lawyer is needed in Bangkok, it becomes necessary to find both an effective advocate and a lawyer who can speak to the foreign client in the client's native language.

More than mere language capability, a Bangkok lawyer should be accustomed to the ways of the foreign (or farang as foreigners are referred to in Thai) client. It is advisable for the foreign client to retain the services of a firm that has a foreign attorney on staff who can liaise with the Thai lawyer while at the same time adding his or her opinion where pertinent.

Another problem for prospective clients in Thailand is the fact that many "legal consultants," lead clients to believe that they are in fact lawyers from a country other than Thailand. It is a fact that non-Thais are barred from practicing law in Thailand and Bangkok. However, this does not preclude a non-Thai attorney from performing functions specific to his or her jurisdiction. The challenge: discerning foreigners licensed to practice in another country from those falsely claiming foreign professional legal credentials. An easy way of deciphering what type of foreign legal consultant one is dealing with: ask for credentials. If the foreign lawyer cannot produce a license or a Bar Card from another country then it is probably advisable to seek other counsel.

The most optimal way for a foreign client seeking a Bangkok lawyer to obtain competent legal counsel is retain the service of a firm employing both Thai and foreign legal staff in order to ensure that all facets of the legal issues are dealt with.
