Hiring A Nanny: Do's And Don'ts

By:

When hiring a nanny, a parent is faced with a number of questions and challenges. It can be hard to invite a stranger into your home to care for your most precious possessions; your children. When choosing a nanny, it is important that you do your homework thoroughly. The more you know about your nanny before you hire her, the less likely you are to suffer from unpleasant surprises down the road. Your nanny will be your employee, and as his or her employer, you are required to ask your questions before your hire a potential nanny to come into your home.

First, decide if you are going to be hiring an in-home nanny or a live-out nanny. There are advantages and disadvantages to each. A live out nanny may be less expensive because you are not providing her food and shelter as well as employment. She or he may have an easier time adjusting to the job because it doesn't cause their style or quality of life to change. On the other hand, a live in nanny may be more convenient for you, the parent, because he or she is available on call all of the time, and may be better equipped to assist you during last minute emergencies.

After you've decided what type of nanny you'd like to hire, the interview process can begin. You may want to use a nanny placement service to save yourself the exhausting process of checking the backgrounds of each individual nanny that you interview. If you choose to interview and screen your own nannies, remember some basic requirements that they should all have. They should have first aid and CPR training, and have documentation to prove that this training has been done. Good references from other families are a must. See if they can provide at least three references from past employers, preferably from a child care background. They should have a clean criminal record and be of generally good health. Finally, if you are planning to have him or her drive your children in a car, they should have a valid license with a clean driving record.

If you decide to use a nanny placement service, all of these background checks are performed for you and nannies are prescreened before sent to you for interviews. Inviting a nanny into your home is a big commitment and your complete trust must be placed in the person you hire. Make sure all of your bases are covered so that you can be confident in his or her performance.
