Hiring A Car At Malaga Airport: A Fool Proof Guide To Malaga Airport Car Hire

By:

Every year Malaga Airport handles in excess of 13 million passengers, a figure that is set to rapidly increase when the third terminal opens next year (2010). So with this many visitors you can guarantee that there are plenty of Malaga Airport car hire firms ready to take advantage of the hoards. This year however because tourist figures were expected to be down the companies reduced the number of cars in their fleets. The result has been chaos and a lot more people having to use the Malaga Airport buses as last minute holiday-makers take a break from the poor British summer.

While it has always been true that booking a car hire at Malaga Airport in advance is the best plan because you get the cheaper rates and can guarantee the type of vehicle you want, it is now doubly so as you may end up with no car at all. Particularly a nightmare if you are travelling over with golf equipment and luggage.

There are currently a total of 23 car hire companies at Malaga Airport but this includes the outer periphery. Actually based within the Terminal 2 building where most flights from the UK land are 10 firms which are Auriga Crown, Autos Lido, Avis, Europcar, Goldcar, Hertz, National Atesa, Record, Sixt and Solmar. To find them from baggage reclaim you go to the end of hall and just before the exit to the main arrivals lobby you turn right and go down a ramp to the lower ground where all the desks are.

Remember when hiring a car that you will need a credit card, even if this is not how the payment is made, as they need to swipe it for insurance purposes and a debit card will not be accepted. Once you have signed everything and picked up your keys you will need to collect your car. The person at the desk will tell you which level of the car park your car is on or it will be written on your key fob for you. To find the car park walk to the far end of the hall and go through the exit straight into Level -1 where Autos Lido, Avis, Goldcar, Hertz, National Atesa and Record keep their cars. For Auriga Crown, Europcar, Solmar and Sixt and more National Atesa and Record vehicles take the lift up to the Ground Floor. This is a general rule but is not set in stone as depending on space the firms may put their cars else where.

Returning a vehicle is simple as all 10 firms have booths within the car park for this purpose so you do not have to go back to the offices in the terminal. Entrance is just after the normal P1 & P2 entrance bays and is clearly signposted for hire cars only. The returns offices for Autos Lido, Avis, Goldcar, Hertz and Record are on Level-1, while for Auriga Crown, Europcar, National Atesa, Sixt and Solmar they are on Level -2 (Sixt is the only one that also has a returns desk on the ground floor as well).

For those renting a car from Terminal 1 there are 5 desks (Auriga Crown, Autos Lido, Europcar, National and Sixt) situated in the arrivals hall just after baggage reclaim. Apart from the Malaga Airport car rental companies based within the terminals there are also those located off-site. These are Autolink, Cargest, First Car Group, Global, Helle Hollis, Holiday, Malagacar, Marbesol, National, Niza, Tony's, Top rent-a-car and Yellow Car can be found on the approach road into Malaga Airport. Courtesy buses pick up from the bus stop outside Malaga Airport arrivals, which is 50 metres to the right of the exit. They either turn up every 15 minutes or keep an eye on your flight details and turn up to coincide with you leaving baggage reclaim.
