7 Signs it May be Time to Fire Your Personal Trainer

While many of us prefer hire a personal trainer we can trust and work with regularly, there will be a time in your life when you may need to make a change. All professionals, accountants, dentists, doctors, lawyers – they all appreciate your loyalty. There's simply no reason to keep giving them your hard earned money if they're no longer doing the job you hired them for. The same applies to your relationship with your personal fitness trainer. Here are some signs it may be time to move on.

Blatant Unprofessionalism

Your time is valuable and your trainer should be as respectful of your time as you are of his. Emergencies do happen, so one or two cancellations or late start times shouldn't be a huge deal. Repetitive events, especially if he shows up late but doesn't give you the full hour you paid for, are another story. Try letting him know that you appreciate his skill but that the cancellations and shortened workouts aren't what you need. See if he is apologetic and tries to correct his mistakes going forward. If not, move on.

You Talk too Much

Communication is incredibly important, but you should not spend your entire workout session talking about your day-to-day life or listening to your trainer talk about his. You should start each session with a conversation about your health, fitness, aches, pains, and goals. Your session should go on from there, with plenty of communication regarding your abilities to do each technique. A little bit of personal chatter is alright, especially as you begin developing a working relationship, but excessive chatter will only set you back. Find a trainer who can keep his mouth shut long enough to let you work out properly.

Lack of an Individualized Routine

It doesn't matter what trainer you are working with, the fitness routine you are working with should be tailored to your unique needs. Is the routine your trainer gave you just that – routine? If so, he may not have the expertise necessary to accommodate you and your personal goals. It may be time to find a fitness program in West Chester involving trainers with a little more experience.

Your Trainer Won't Listen

Does your trainer listen to the feedback you are giving him? Does he make modifications if you say an exercise is too rough or if you complain about the intensity? Working hard is one thing. Working beyond your physical capabilities, especially if you are out of shape to begin with, can be dangerous. Your trainer should be willing to take your feedback and put it to good use, creating a program that is geared more towards your abilities so that you can grow from there.

You Feel Injured

Your exercise routine leaves your muscles feeling worked out and as you do each exercise you can “feel the burn.” The problem is that there is a difference between feeling muscle fatigue and feeling actual pain. You should never feel real pain while working out. A trainer who tells you to work through any sort of pain is setting you up for injury, whether he realizes it or not.

Your Trainer Acts Like a Doctor

It's acceptable to tell your trainer about a pain you feel, especially if it is a result of your workout. It is not ok for your personal fitness trainer to take that information, make a diagnosis, and give you a treatment plan. A good trainer may tell you what he thinks but will refer you to a doctor for a real diagnosis. He may even ask you to bring a note from your doctor saying a) what is wrong so that you can work on a plan or b) clearing you to exercise again.

You are Simply Uncomfortable

Your personal trainer knows things about you that no one else does, including your body measurements, body fat, and weight. He or she will need to get close to you while you are working out, sometimes touching you to correct your form or to spot you during a routine. If you aren't comfortable with your trainer getting close, or if you feel he isn't acting professionally, you should simply move on. There are trainers who can do their jobs without making you uncomfortable.

There are dozens of different fitness programs in West Chester, some offering group training while others offer one-on-one time with personal trainers. Make sure you are comfortable with the person you are working with and don't feel bad about severing the relationship if you are not. Your health will always be your number one priority!
