Hip Hop's Fall From The Apex

By:

Rap music has always been the best selling music genre since its creation. However, things have drastically changed and Hip Hop sales are always declining. Now it isn't as common to see an overall #1 Hip Hop album on the charts. A lot of people have theories why this is happening. The internet is only one of the main reasons and it isn't fully responsible. This article will discuss each of the important reasons that sales are declining in this great music genre.

The actual content of Hip Hop music is not as good as it once was. During the golden era of Rap music, artists came out with new topics, new rhymes, new styles, and won over the hearts of many Rap heads. Until the new century, Rap was constantly blossoming into new music. Since then, music has been getting less creative. Do we blame the followers or the musicians? Is there nothing left to say on a Rap song? Now, almost every popular artist and song is just generic. Why buy a new album if the last album you bought has a different artist saying the same exact thing?

The internet is what is mostly responsible for the decline. The ability to get free Hip Hop album (illegally) has tempted most Rap fans, instead of going and supporting their favorite artists. This may be the number one reason that Rap sales consistently decline. Most people get hundreds of albums and never get caught so why would they stop? it has hurt the music industry as a whole, not just the Rap scene.

What effect does this all have on Hip Hop music? Record labels that used to be at the top are now clinging to their last hopes. Artists are producing more music faster and the quality of the content is becoming lower. Now, new artists try to be as mainstream as possible to sell like the few that still sell well. The creativity was left in the golden era and new emcees are just trying to live their dream by selling out. The less creative the music gets, the less people will go out and buy a new album. It is a vicious circle.

Is there any way that the fans of Rap can revert the game back to the golden age? Piracy will never stop, no matter how much we would like it to. We can go out and purchase the original artist's albums and show the music industry that quality music does still sell. In the future, Hip Hop may return to its glory. Hopefully, something can be done before Rap is dead altogether.
