Hip Hop Roots And Its History

By:

The Hip Hop scene has always had a massive effect on the youth customs. The youth that live in urban areas have always been able to completely relate to Hip Hop. Since Hip Hop started in the early 70s, it has became more like a way of life than just a music genre. Hip Hop has shaped a distinctive clothing style, a unique language full of slang, and its own matchless portrayals of world issues. Hip Hop has a different feel than every other music genre.

Keith Wiggins was the first one to use the term Hip Hop in relation to the music in the 70s. He is considered to be the one who gave the genre its certified name. He was a part of the legendary Hip Hop group Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. This group was one of the first and played a major part in the foundation of a fan base for the music. Of course, there were other groups that were just as crucial to the early Hip Hop scene such as The Sugar Hill Gang and the first female group, The Sequence.

DJ Kool Herc, or Clive Campbell, is possibly the most significant innovator in Hip Hop. Most people believe that he created the Hip Hop music genre. He went against what was popular in Bronx in the 70s. He, along with additional imperative DJ's, combined funk, rock, and Latin percussion into one piece. This fusion is what started the Hip Hop music genre. DJ's are the ones who created the genre. Break dancing united in the movement as the breaks that DJ's produced were perfect for B-Boys. Hip Hop was started by DJ's and then it grew with the addition of B-Boys. After they began to get more prevalent, Emcees began joining with the DJ's and rapped over the mixes. Emcees then took the attention away from the DJ's and B-Boys over time. Lyrics began to get more expressive that the inner-city population could relate to. Rapping was just a way to present poetic skills along with the rhythm of an instrumental.

Hip Hop has altered so much that the old school and new school don't even seem like the same genre. Emcees have triumphed over the other three parts of the primary Hip Hop lifestyle. Hip Hop is a genre that is constantly evolving as the city youth is altering. As there lives alter, the music changes along with them. Some people believe that Hip Hop has strayed too far and lost the vital roots of the music. Other people believe that Hip Hop has to change to adapt with the ever changing lifestyle of urban youth in the present day. Whatever you may think, there is no question that Hip Hop is one of the most influential music genres in the world.
