Hindu Festival In Jakarta 2012 A Riot Of Colour

The connection between Indonesia and India is an ancient one, extending over a thousand years. Over a millennium ago, traders from the subcontinent used to visit Sumatra and Java, forever changing the cultural landscape of those islands. While Bali is currently the stronghold of Hinduism in Indonesia, Hindu festivals are widely celebrated throughout the country, including Jakarta, the country's cosmopolitan capital.

Undoubtedly the most popular Hindu festival in Jakarta is Holi which is one of the citys liveliest annual events. Sometimes called the 'festival of colour', people celebrate it by throwing water and coloured powder over each other. Usually both youngsters as well as adults take part enthusiastically, and in Jakarta, even non-Hindus participate in the fun. The festival traces its origins to an old myth about a man named Prahlad, whose devotion and loyalty to the God, Vishnu, saved him from a burning pyre while his wicked aunt, Holika, perished in the inferno. The word 'Holi' is derived from Holika.

Nyepi, which is more popularly practised in Bali, stands in stark contrast to Holi. Meaning 'Day of Silence', Nyepi is a festival of silence, introspection and fasting. It is observed from 6 in the morning till 6 in the evening, and during that time noise is kept to a minimal. While observed in isolated pockets in Jakarta, Bali becomes something of a ghost town during Nyepi with everyone, including non-Hindus and tourists, participating in the day of silence.
