High Expectations For The Movie Avatar

By:

Many believe that science fiction movies of recent times have been both uninspired and just plain bad. Many feel they lack imagination, and just do not seem to grip people in the way that science fiction used to. However, that may be about to change when director James Cameron brings moviegoers his new science fiction epic, Avatar.

Avatar takes place in the twenty second century, on a moon called Pandora. A space marine, whose career has ended due to an accident that has left him paraplegic, is put in control of an Avatar, a human and alien hybrid that is directly connected to his mind. The air on Pandora is toxic, and can only be breathed by the moon's blue skinned, ten foot tall inhabitants. Being able to use the avatar restores the marine's ability to walk, but only when he controls the avatar. Things change for our hero when he falls in love with the alien princess. Things are further complicated when he finds himself at the center of a conflict between the human military and the aliens.

The film has been heavily hyped for years, with many of the story elements being very closely guarded. Many are saying that if the film meets even a small portion of the heavy hype that James Cameron has built for it, it may very well be his best film. But speculation does not always equal a good film. Cameron's original scriptment from the 1990s had been on the internet for years, but when it was decided that he was going to do a full production of the movie, the studio had every site that had it remove it. Visual details of the film have also been kept heavily under wraps, but of the things that are known, it is known that motion capture, such as the kind used in the Lord of the Rings films, King Kong, Beowulf, and Monster House.

However, Cameron seeks to innovate with this movie by being able to film on real live sets instead of digital back lots, or as they are more popularly known, green screens. This is something that Cameron's team has supposedly been able to achieve, with the goal being that the audience could not tell the difference between live action and animation. The film has also utilized a new kind of camera that is capable of mimicking human sight, which should make for some fantastic viewing. Avatar opens December, 2009.
