High Energy-using Appliances In Your Home

By:

Bill Lutz is an electrician with Generation 3 Electric in Philadelphia. Here, he talks about what appliances use the most energy in your home.
In general, an appliance that heats or cools is the biggest consumer of electricity as the conversion rate is almost one-to-one during its changing the state of heat.
1.Heating appliances
You should be conservative in your use of any heating appliances such as electric clothes dryers, hair dryers, curling irons and electric heaters. These items use heating coils and usually have a one-to-one conversion rate, which means they sap a huge amount of power.
Advanced and expensive hair dryers and curling irons make hair dry quicker, but be aware that they require a higher ampere and use more electricity. With such high energy consumption appliances, you can also have problems with surges and circuits. So take a look at what else is plugged into the circuit before you power up these appliances.
2.Cooling devices
Devices such as air conditioners, freezers and refrigerators are also huge drainers of energy. They are similar to heating appliances in terms of the conversion rate.
3.Entertainment systems
Most people dont realize that entertainment systems are also using a lot more energy. A plasma or LCD TV uses much more energy than an older tube TV does. And most entertainment centers today are major power players.
4.Cooking appliances
Cooking appliances like microwave ovens are now cooking faster and better than ever before as they use more energy. Be sure to purchase EnergyStar certified cooking appliances to save as much energy as you can.
5.Vacuum cleaners
Vacuum cleaners use a lot of electricity as well. Many vacuums use 9 to 12 amps and most normal home electricity systems need only 15 amps, which is why many people overload and blow circuits when they switch on their vacuum cleaner. Modern vacuums are sold at even higher rating than older models, so be aware of the rating when you purchase a new cleaner. Again, buy EnergyStar devices whenever possible.
