High Cost Of Living In Australia

By:

There are a number of articles on the Internet today which suggest that the cost of living in Australia is increasing and putting more and more expats under pressure. As a consequence there is speculation, and indeed the Lord Mayor of London added to this speculation, that many expats are now looking to repatriate themselves to the UK after living the good life in Australia.

So is the cost of living in Australia really increasing at a dramatic rate?

When you take into account that Australian inflation fell from 2.5% in November 2 .4% in December this compares very favourably with the UK rate which is nearly double. It is perhaps the fact that Australia has gone through a period of relative economic growth and the cost of living has lagged this growth that we are now seeing pressure on some families today.

Areas of difficulty

Australia is a massive country and has a massive divergences in the cost of living and the standard of living with cities such as Sydney, Melbourne etc very often in the list of most expensive countries in the world in which to live. It seems that many expats were happy to push their financial resources to the limit to live the good life in these headline grabbing cities and are perhaps now beginning to pay the price.

Upon landing in a new country it is vital that all expats have a financial cushion on which to fall back in troubled times such as we see today. However, for many people it is easy to take on employment positions and spend, spend, spend including their savings. Unfortunately, once the good times are over and reality kicks in for many people this can put significant pressure on monthly budgets and expenditure.

Saving money

A report in the UK suggests that over 50% of goods will be bought over the Internet in 2011 which when you bear in mind the relative reduction in base costs for businesses should filter through to better pricing for consumers. It is also worth noting the various promotions and offers which regularly appear on the Internet and which many consumers are not taking advantage of in these times of austerity. Therefore, if you're looking for services and goods which have perhaps risen in price recently then why not check the Internet and various comparison website to see what deals and what offers are available to you?

The future

Despite the short-term concerns regarding the cost of living Australia there is no doubt that the economy is well-positioned for medium and long-term growth. True, there may be some troubled times in the short term but this is not out of sync with the worldwide economy where countries such as the UK are faring relatively worse than countries such as Australia. The cost of living is impacted significantly by the cost of oil which has risen recently despite concerns of a double dip worldwide recession. Is it really worthwhile ending your dream in Australia because of short-term financial circumstances which may be no better in your former homeland?
