Hey Buddy - Need A Used Car?

By:

Pre-owned automobiles are now a viable option for people who are caught up in the foreclosure mess or the current recession. Finding a good quality used car is not really difficult nowadays as there are thousands of used cars all over the US. There are a wide range of makes and models to choose from, so if you're in the market for a used car will not limit your choices.

In reality, as these vehicles are 'used', it is important for a buyer to be advised some of the pitfalls of selecting a used automobile so you get good value for your money. Here's some tips to help you along the 'used car buying' path.

Look for the best deal you can make

Pre-owned car sales lots need you - more than you need them. With this in mind you should be able to hunt down the make of car you really want and get a good price. Some of the better used car dealers will be offering promos deals and specials because of the amount of inventory they are holding. You may also be able to get some free services like gas or a years worth of car washes.

Be careful of taking the first deal that comes along. You're not paying full price as you would with a brand new car, but you still need to get a quality auto. Additionally, whether it is a brand new car or a used one, you'll be paying for quite some time. So you need to get the best value for your hard earned dollar.

Give yourself time to shop around

When you begin your search for your used car allow yourself enough time. You need to visit different dealer lots and spend some time 'kicking the tires', as they say. You don't want to pick out a car immediately and then regret it a few months later.

If you think you're too hurried for time, you may just settle for something instead of getting the vehicle you really want. This could be fine if it's a brand new auto because there won't be any problem with wear and tear. But buying a used car in a hurry can spell disaster in more ways than one, as you may also be compromising your safety and the safety of your family.

Learn the Lemon Laws of your state

Most state lemon laws cover new and used vehicles but you should check the policy of your state specifically for used cars. Should you discover that a used car has been sold to you under false pretenses, did not operate the way it was supposed to or several other conditions, you have distinct legal rights as a customer under your states lemon laws.

Buying an auto from Aunt Minnie or Uncle Joe

Occasionally purchasing a used vehicle from a friend or relation can be a wonderful experience and save you money versus buying from a dealer that you are not too familiar with. You have less chance of ending up with a clunker in the long run as they may be selling out of necessity, not because the car is worn out. You may also be able to get a much better price from someone you know as they cut you some slack and be more willing to help you out.

Check with your friends to find out who they bought from

Another idea is to question your friends, co-workers or relatives that may have recently bought a used car, where they went and how they were treated. They'll be able to assist you with guidance and help you choose a quality used car. They can also refer you to a reputable used car dealer and maybe even the salesman they used. This way you can be assured of the quality and service you will receive.

Additionally, ask colleagues at work or neighbors as they will probably be more than willing to help you and offer advice. You've got eveything to gain and nothing to lose by getting as much knowledge as possible about buying a used car.
