How to find a Good Plumber in Your Area

Your home may just well be your largest asset. Its important to take the time to find a business you can put your trust in. It could be the difference between a result never having to be touched again, or a mess that wasnt done to code needing costly repairs in the future, and possibly not being able to sell your home, when it comes time, without redoing the project.

Steps to finding a good plumber:

1.)Check to make sure plumber is licensed and insured.
2.)Get multiple references.
3.)Ask how long they have been in business.
4.)Get at least one other bid for the job to make sure they are not ripping you off.
5.)Find a plumber that will give you pricing for small jobs over the phone.
6.)Get flat rate estimates so you know the total you will pay beforehand.

Best Places for References

I recommend the first place you begin your search is Angieslist.com. This website provides reviews for businesses specifically in the service sector. They have plumbers, contractors, painters, etc. The main reason this site is recommended in lieu of others is because they go to great lengths to certify that their reviews are made by real customers, not falsified. At angieslist.com you can use the law of large numbers. Most companies are listed in your area, and some companies have hundreds of reviews from customers that have received their services.

If possible, try to find references from experts in the housing industry that may have worked with multiple plumbing companies in the past. This could be contractors, real estate agents, rental management companies, local plumbing supply stores, etc. They will have a good idea of who is the best in the area. However, If it doesnt match up with what you have found elsewhere, continue your research.

Things to look for in a Qualified Plumber:

Is the plumber current on all state license or certifications? Call to verify that their license is current and check to see if there are any active complaints filed against the plumber.

Questions to Ask when receiving bids:

1.Ask about the quality of materials that will be used in the project.
2.Life span of materials or equipment.
3.Manufacturers Warranty if any and Plumbers warranty on workmanship.

Insurance:

Be sure the plumber you are considering is fully insured, which includes workers compensation and liability insurance. Ask then for the insurance policy number (call their main office).

Contact your local better business bureau to find out if any complaints have been filed against the potential plumber.

Warranty

If a warranty was included find out if it has a reasonable amount of time before expiring, and if it has any value. Simply stating a warranty isn't enough. Get it in writing and understand its limitations! A good plumber is happy to stand behind his warranty. Good plumbers use quality materials and know their level of expertise. If a plumberr will not offer a warranty this is a problem in my mind.
