Here's How To Make Frozen Fruit Smoothies

By:

Frozen fruit smoothies are always a favorite in my kitchen. They are quick and easy to make and quite healthy too. You can make these healthy drinks that will cool you down with all sorts of fruit and you can also mix different fruit. Let me explain exactly how to make a frozen fruit smoothie. You won't believe how simple this is.

Here's What You Need:

We'll start with the equipment. To make smoothie you have got to have a good blender. No need to buy a special smoothie maker. Any all-purpose blender will work. I like to make my smoothies individually in a small blender like the magic bullet. Of course regular blenders work just as well, plus you can make more servings at a time.

Frozen fruit comes next. Frozen smoothies can be made with all sorts of different fruit and and feel free to mix and match as well. Some simple ones to start with are strawberries, bananas and peaches.

Yogurt makes another great addition to just about any smoothie. It makes the finished smoothie creamier and gives it some good flavor. You can use any type of yogurt. I usually stick to low-fat versions to keep the calories in check. Another great option is thicker greek yogurt.

You will also need liquid of some sort to thin things down. You can use water, milk or your favorite juice. The amount of liquid you need will depend on how thick or thin you like your smoothie. A good rule of thumb is to start with 1 part yogurt, 1 part juice or milk and 2 parts of frozen fruit. Here's an example: Blend two cups frozen strawberries with one cup each of vanilla yogurt and orange juice.

As I mentioned above you can adjust the consistency of your smoothie by adding more or less of the liquid. You can also blend in some ice as well to make it more frozen and lighter

Let's Start Blending :

Let's talk about blending. Toss your fruit and yogurt in the blender and give it a few whirls, then add the liquid. Pulsing seems to work best since it gives the larger fruit chunks a chance to sink back down in between blends. This will make sure everything gets pureed and blended nicely resulting in a yummy smoothie.

Should your blender get to the point where it is having a hard time moving everything around, your smoothie is too thick. Add some more liquid and it will work just fine.

If you are planning on using a good bit of ice in your smoothie, start by chopping it in your blender first before you add any of the fruit or yogurt. It will help mix the other ingredients together.

By the way, you don't have to stick to just frozen fruit in your smoothie. Feel free to mix both fresh and frozen fruits. You can purchase the frozen fruit at the store, or freeze your own when it is in season. Berries can be frozen whole.

Most of my frozen fruit smoothies contain frozen banana slices. Whenever you find yourself with a banana that's getting a little too ripe, peel it, and then slice it. Put them into a freezer bag and freeze until you need them for a smoothie. Adding them gives your smoothie a nice creamy texture and adds some sweetness as well.
