Whenever someone brings the health care profession of physician assistant, people usually also confuse the career with that of medical assistant, nurses and even doctors themselves when there is a huge difference. Yes, all these health care professionals have their similarities and differences but the goal that they all have in common is providing correct patient care to save lives and stop suffering. The philosophies that all these workers have been trained to pursue are all different.

The AAPA otherwise known as the American Academy of Physician Assistant has defined the profession of physician assistant as someone who is a licensed health care professional who provides health care services while working with a physician as their supervisor. A good, successful and competent physician assistant should be able to show their ability to be intelligent, to have good judgment, they should be able to show that they have good interpersonal skills, and they should be able to show that they have the ability to be calm and work intelligently as they provide services in emergency situations.

Other characteristics that they should be able to demonstrate is their good bedside manner as they work in direct contact with patients, and should have a willingness to continue studying throughout their career because they have to continue their education even when they become certified professionals. Physician assistants have been trained both academically and clinically so that they will be able to practice medicine in a justified manner. A PA can be found working in many different areas of the health care industry.

The responsibilities that physician assistants have while working in the medical world is performing physical exams on patients, they are able to diagnose patient conditions while working in collaboration with their supervising physician, in some states they have the authority to write prescriptions for patients with chronic and acute illnesses, and they are even able to assist during surgeries. In order to be a certified PA who is able to practice medicine, then you are going to have to get your state license based on their laws.

The health care profession of physician assistant is one of Americas fastest growing careers here in 2011 according to the Bureau of Labor. The Association of American Medical Colleges has predicted that there will be a shortage of physicians in the upcoming years and because of this there will be more PAs than physicians in the future. This is nothing short of a rewarding career.
