Herbs Galore

The common herb is basically any plant that is used whole or in part as an ingredient for a fragrance, for health purposes or simply as a an ingredient in flavoring your food.

Herbs can be steeped to make teas; to perk up cooked foods such as meats, vegetables, sauces, and soups; or to add flavor to your dips, vinegars, mustards and butters for added variety. Many herbs are grown simply for their fragrance and then used in potpourri, nosegays and sachets; or to scent perfumes, oils candles or bath water. And herbs have been used for many, many years for pain herbal remedies or for things like as herbal remedies for depression. More than 25% of our modern drugs today contain plant extracts as active ingredients, and researchers continue to isolate valuable new medicines from plants like herbs and confirm the benefits of those used by people over the years for medicinal purposes.

In the botanical sense, the common herb is simply a plant whose stem is soft and green and shows little growth of wood. It dies each winter to a perennial root system. But in the garden sense, herbs are plants that serve as a major source of seasonings in the preparation of foods. Then, in a broader sense, herbs also include those plants that are also useful for adding scents in cosmetics or for medicinal purposes. Then again, some of them are woody and go beyond the definition of the herbaceous plant.

Many people love the herbs so much that they decide to grow their own and use them as fresh as possible rather than staying with the dried variety. And the amazing thing is that herbs are very easy to grow, even for the novice gardener. All you have to do is make sure you have well drained soil, don't use too much fertilizer and you're good to go. Usually the largest problem is deciding what to choose from with a large variety of herbs available that you can grow. One important thing to remember though is that when you do plant your garden make sure it is as close as possible to the kitchen. I know it sound a little trite to say this but you would be surprised at how many herb gardeners plant their herbs all the way in the back of their garden and then when they need them find it is just "too far" to walk to harvest. Put them right at your back door instead. You could even grow the ones you would use most often in a handy window sill container if need be, but grow the ones youll use the most, right where it is easiest to harvest them. Remember, it is not easy to leave heated cooking utensils and stoves for even the five minutes it takes to get to the back of your garden.

Herbs can be used in so many ways. They definitely can make your food tastier but they also allow us to eat much healthier. Herbs have also been used as very powerful medicinal plants that have the potential to address many of your major health problems today as they've done for many, many people over the years. Just remember to consult a health adviser before starting any herbal treatments.
