If you are reading this then you already probably know that the use of herbs can be traced back to the ancient Egyptians and Chinese. In fact, there are even several references in the Bible, as well as in many medieval documents, that confirm herbs have been used in the vast majority of households. Having an herb garden at home has several benefits, in that it can supply you with a wide variety of herbs which can be used to add flavor to food, to make tea, for homemade potpourri, and even for medicinal purposes. Several different herbs can also be used as a deterrent for pests in the garden, and one of the best things about herb gardens is that you can grow different herbs for different purposes in a garden all of their own, or else you can simply begin growing some in between other plants.

Depending on your needs and requirements, you can either grow your herbs outside in the garden, or you can start a small indoor garden instead. If you do decide to grow them outdoors then you'll be pleased to know that a piece of ground measuring four feet by six feet is sufficient enough to grow enough herbs for a small family. Even though most people use herbs primarily for cooking, many of them can also be used for their aromatic foliage, and even for their flowers. Herbs can also be used either fresh or dried, or simply to garnish salads and plates.

Herbs are much like all of the other plants in the lovely plant kingdom. That is to say they all grow in about the same way. You could have trees, annuals, perennials, and even shrubs. When you decide to plant your herbs, make sure that your soil is well drained and loose. Organic matter will help soil that is heavy, and you do not need to use any sort of fertilizers. As far as location goes, you will find that herbs need the sun, just like any other plant.

There are a few ways that you can grow your herbs. For instance you could choose to grow them directly from the seeds as many people do, or you could buy them and bring the plants home to plant in your garden. It's quite fun growing herbs, because they are more than just something pretty to look at. They can be used for so many different applications, but growing them tends to be a bit tricky at times. For one thing you should make sure that you do not plant your seeds too deep. They need to be planted shallow simply because their roots do not grow very deep. If it is cold outside when you want to grow your herbs then you can always grow it inside, and then transplant it outside during the spring. There are a few herbs that don't transplant properly though, and among them are dill, fennel, and anise.

It's pretty fun to grow herbs, but that doesn't mean there isn't a bit of work involved. Though this article has given you the basics, there is still a lot more that you will need to know! Do your research, look online and soon you will know everything that you need to!
