Helping Your Kids Personalize Their Belongings

By:

Personalized items are a lot of fun for everyone, especially kids. Having something that stands out from what everyone else has makes you feel special. This is especially true for items that everyone in your child's class has to have or wants to have. For instance, all little kids have to wear bike helmet covers and if your child's can be one of a kind and reflect their personality, they will probably be a lot happier wearing it. A helmet cover can be boring and cumbersome, but if you help your child jazz theirs up and include features they love, they are more likely to enjoy wearing this protective gear. You can avoid a lot of fights by making something a child does not want to do fun for them and personalizing equipment and belongings is a great way to ramp up the fun.

Another way to create a feeling of personalization is to help your child pick unique clothing. Kids often have an odd sense of style and you should encourage this. Children should dress appropriately for the weather and for their safety, but as long as these bases are covered, let your kids have fun with clothes. They may look back and think they look foolish, but at the time, it will boost their confidence and help them develop their own unique look.

A great way to personalize an item for kids is with stickers and decals. If every child in your class has the same lunchbox or book covers or notebooks, you child can make their materials stand out with stickers. Let them choose their stickers so they feel a sense of ownership of the item. This encourages kids to take better care of their belongings because they can take pride in their stuff. This is also a great way to get them excited about eating or reading or studying.

Kids may also want to stand out and be unique on the sports field or court. A lot of kids participate in sports and need to wear uniforms. There is nothing wrong with a uniform, but you kid may want to have a style of their own and you may want to be able to easily recognize your child on the playing field. Brightly colored shoes are a great way to really make a statement. Encourage your child to pick athletic sneakers in a bright color or give them some brightly colored laces to top off the look.

There are plenty of style trends that spread like wildfire through groups of kids and while participating in these trends is normal and healthy, you may want to give your child a chance to not just follow the crowd. Helping them find a way to make a trend their own is to allow them to express themselves through the trend. If your child wants to have fun with their friends wearing a certain look, help them do so by overdoing it. For instance, if all the little girls your daughter knows is wearing gummy bracelets and she want to as well, have her wear tons of them. She will be the envy of her class and she will stand out in a sea of girls doing the same thing.
