Helping Your Child To Deal With A New Sibling

Bringing a new child home from the hospital is one of the happiest and most exciting times that we can face as parents. The unfortunate thing is, it can also cause some friction in the household whenever there are other children who are also living there. Dealing with this friction properly can really help you to be able to assist your child in living with the situation and perhaps even embracing it. This is even possible whenever a child may be dealing with low self-esteem as a result of the new addition to the family.

Perhaps one of the most important things that you can do when you bring a new child home is to give plenty of reassurance to the children who are already in the home. Of course, the new baby is going to require a lot of your time and attention but that does not necessarily mean that the time and attention should come at the expense of what was generally given to your other children. It is important for you to make sure that you are making time for everyone in the household, and they will see that the new child is not going to be a threat to the affection that they receive from you.

Along with giving your children equal time, you also want to make sure that you are spending plenty of private time with each child as well. This can be a little bit difficult, especially if one or both parents work outside of the household or if you are in a single-parent family. Perhaps you could enlist the assistance of a trusted friend or a family member in order to help you to do this properly. Otherwise, you're just going to have to schedule well, in order to achieve the results that you desire. It will take some work on your part, but the results will be well worth any effort that goes into it.
