Helping To Find Water - The Importance Of Water Well Drilling Equipment

By:

Building a new home or a business from the ground up in a rural area often requires that a water well be drilled, since naturally the structure will need to have a constant supply of fresh water. Drilling for water entails much more than simply boring a hole into the earth. It requires the expertise of professionals to ensure that it is done effectively, safely and in a cost-effective manner.

It takes a great deal of skill to guide and control a water well drill, as it breaks through the many layers of the earth including sand, gravel clay and solid rock. The drill rods themselves can weigh many tons and if the drill is pushed too forcefully or turns too quickly, the bit wears out. If it does not use enough force it will fail to penetrate the rock. It is therefore very important that water well drilling equipment is made to the highest standards so that it can do its job and do it well.

When drilling for water once the water has been located, the drill operator must be very attentive. The rock formations must be monitored and water samples must be taken. With rotary drilling the drill bit is on the end of the drill pipe. The bit is made of something very durable, such as tungsten, so that the bit can chew up or grind the rock in order to penetrate deep into the ground. The broken pieces of rock are washed away with the use of a drilling fluid that brings the waste up to the surface. This fluid also works to keep the drill bit cool and helps to keep the walls of the hole intact as the drilling is taking place.

Another type of water well drilling uses a machine called a cable tool. In this method, a heavy bit is attached to the end of a cable which is raised and dropped over and over - literally pounding its way through the various layers of the earth's surface. This is a rather slow method of drilling for water but it is still used in many locations. With both methods of drilling, the top section of the inside of the well, is made of a steel casing and the width of the hole is normally a few centimetres wider than the width of the casing. The space between the casing and the hole must be filled so that dirty surface water does not seep into this area. A special type of grout is used to fill this space or it can also be filled with finely crushed rock or clay.

Water well drilling is best left to the experts. Drilling companies who specialise in drilling water wells use state-of-the-art equipment and the crew consists of experienced professionals who are very adept at locating a source of water. It is very important that the drilled water be tested throughout the drilling process, so it requires professionals to carry out this testing to ensure that the water meets certain scientific standards.
