Helping Someone Who Is Grieving The Loss Of A Pet

By:

The majority of pet owners enjoy rich, loving relationships with their pets, and often times a pet is considered to be a member of the family, just as much a part of the household as a daughter or son. For a single man or woman, or a couple without children, a pet can even take the place of a child, and thus be just as near and dear to the owner's heart as an actual child might be, or even more so.

This being the case, the loss of a pet can be very difficult, and even heartbreaking, and the grieving process is very important.

In order to help someone who is grieving the loss of a pet, the most important thing is perhaps to recognize the intense relationship he or she most likely shared with the pet. For people who don't own pets it may be difficult to understand the bond which can be formed between owner and pet, but you must be able to put yourself in that person's shoes and think of the loss of the pet as if it were the loss of a child; in doing so, you'll be able to be of the greatest help. Your friend may experience all of the symptoms which accompany the grieving of a lost loved one - loss of appetite, difficulty sleeping, difficulty focusing, or depression - and if you consider the fact that pet was most likely a source of great love and companionship in the owner's life, the mourning won't seem uncommon in the least.

One way to help someone who is grieving the loss of a pet to cope with their sorrow is to suggest a funeral or memorial service, both of which can be of significant help in the grieving process. This can be especially helpful for children seeking a way to say goodbye, and can be held in a traditional format with family and friends at home or in the woods, or at any other burial site. In addition, any type of small memorial can be erected in the home.

Another way to help a friend mourning the loss of a pet may be to suggest that they write about their pet. Whether it's a letter to the pet, a story or series of stories or anecdotes, songs, or poetry, often times committing emotion to paper is a way of coping with and accepting that sorrow. It can be a meaningful exercise in remembrance and can also be a therapeutic one in that it can provide an outlet for grief. Writing also serves as a memorial after the grieving process has been completed and as a means of reflecting upon the fond memories that were no doubt had with the lost beloved pet.
