Helping Kids Respond To An Accident

By:

Moms and dads have an important task of teaching kids how to respond if there is an accident. When an accident happens to a child, parents need to react quickly and responsibly, assuring that the child receives medical attention. But what if the tables are turned and it is the parent that has an accident or something that happens to them while at home alone with his or her children. Teaching the child how to respond if something happens to "mommy" or "daddy" is vital and may save the parent's life.

Children need to learn what number to call if something happens. Teach a child how to use the phone to dial 911. Whether a person has a land line or a cell phone, it is important that a child understands how to call for help. Explain that someone will answer and ask, "What is your emergency?" Have the child practice explaining what happened. With a younger child, make the explanation simple and straightforward. It is important to stress that the phone and dialing 911 are not for fun but only if something happens. It might take examples of when not to call like when mommy or daddy is sleeping or if mommy and daddy are in the shower, and so forth and so on. Giving lots of examples will help the child learn the importance of the simple call.

It is also important for the child to learn his or her home address. Explain to them that the person on the phone will want to know where the family lives so they can come and help "mommy" or "daddy." Teach it to them by having him or her repeat it over and over again till he or she has no issue remembering the address when asked. It is also important to tell the child that the address is only to be given to the person that they talk to on the phone and not to people on the street or other people they do not know.

One last step to help a child is to help them learn to remain calm. Say that it will be hard to see "mommy" or "daddy" hurt, but that if they can talk to the people on the phone, they will come and help as fast as they can. Explaining that they will be able to do what is right when the time comes and that it will be okay. Having the child understand that it is okay to be scared but that someone will come and help will give a parent peace of mind as well as the child.
