Helpful Steps Towards Improving Home Security

By:

While many homeowners may feel secure by installing state of the art home alarm systems, it is important to realize that truly protecting your home from invasion involves deeper consideration. While alarms certainly offer an effective line of defense, they may be rendered useless unless further steps are taken to ensure home security. Heres a list of suggestions that will greatly augment any home security system.

1. Participate in a neighborhood watch program. A community that is well organized and interconnected is much more difficult to infiltrate. Taking time to get to know your neighbors can be enjoyable, and creating a contact list of neighborhood residents is quite helpful when planning trips away from home or reporting suspicious activity. While having nosy neighbors is undesirable, knowing that those around you have a mutual interest in safety is a great benefit. If your neighborhood doesnt have a program in place, dont be afraid to be proactive and start one.

2. Take an extra look around before entering your home. Whether pulling into a garage with an automatic door or walking through your front door, always take a moment to ensure that youre alone. If an intruder were to slip in behind you when entering, no home alarm system will be able to help. Make sure never to disarm the system until youre certain that all is as it should be in your home.

3. Secure all sliding doors and windows. Simply locking a sliding door or window is insufficient since forcefully jarring it will cause it to slip from its tracks and allow it to be removed completely. Installing a horizontal bar on the inside of the door or window to keep it firmly in its closed position prevents it from being pulled and shaken loose.

4. Employ security cameras. As technology improves and becomes more affordable, adding a video surveillance component to your home security system is an effective option. While you may use the monitor to view the cameras live feed, it is also possible to record images while youre away for later playback. Discovering the image of a trespasser spying your home is not only valuable in assessing the threat of invasion, but can also help authorities to identify and apprehend a would-be intruder before he can execute his plan.

5. Dont use firearms as protection. Since most deaths caused by firearms are accidental, using one as a means of home security has the potential to bring about the opposite result. Far too often, homeowners, suspecting an intruder in the home, mistakenly shoot a family member. Moreover, a criminal who is brazen enough to enter your home while youre within is also likely to be armed as well. Brandishing a weapon greatly increases the likelihood that an armed intruder will become violent.

6. Keep doors locked while at home in the day. While the brightness of daytime may create the illusion of safety, it is often the best time for an intruder to strike. Any open door or window makes an easy point of entry for intruders, and your presence in the home is not necessarily a deterrent to the skilled criminal. Keeping doors and windows locked even while at home is the only way to ensure maximum protection.
