Sweating, a dry mouth, blushing-these are things all people experience in certain social situations. Yet, for some, it goes beyond just basic fear, it becomes debilitating and interferes with everyday life. The situations involve any public encounter, from writing on a chalkboard in front of others to using a public restroom. If symptoms are extreme, you may suffer from Social Anxiety disorder and help is available. Treatment options include medications, behavioral therapy and alternative methods.

Medications for social anxiety help range from beta blockers to monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Beta blockers are taken before entering a social setting that you know will produce symptoms. These are frequently used when cognitive function is a main priority. These types of medications do not interfere with mental sharpness, while benzodiazepines often do. Benzodiazepines are not the first choice of medication for social anxiety help. Not only do they run the risk of becoming habit forming, they also slow down your central nervous system and may cause sedation. Yet, if your medical practitioner prescribes this type of medication, discuss your concerns with him as he feels this will be beneficial to you. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors are not frequently used in the treatment of social anxiety disorder due to the high risk of negative side effects. They are very effective so they are most commonly prescribed when a family history of positive use is recorded.

Behavioral therapy is the preferred method of social anxiety help. The most commonly used form is cognitive-behavioral therapy. This may be in a group or individual setting. Methods used include systematic desensitization and negative thought replacement. Systematic desensitization is a gradual exposure to the anxiety producing situation. It begins by imagining the event you fear while using relaxation techniques. Over time, you will become better equipped to deal with the situation. This method has shown great success. Also, negative thought replacement therapy is used to combat symptoms. When you experience a negative thought related to a situation, you replace it with a more rational belief. For example, if your mind is saying, "They're yawning because they are bored by what I am saying", replace this though with, "They're yawning because they are tired after working late last night". By changing negative thought to positive ones, your anxiety will, over time, decrease when confronted with the situation.

Alternative treatments are also being used for treatment. Herbal supplements may benefit those who suffer from social anxiety disorder. Just remember, discuss any supplements you are taking with your doctor as they may interfere with prescription medications. Whichever method you choose, social anxiety help is available just by asking for it.
