Hello, Moto: 6 Tips To Avoid Accidents with Motorcycles - Virginia Motorcycle Accident Attorney

Zoom! As you were just merging onto the highway a motorcyclist came out of nowhere, just barely colliding with your vehicle. Merging a second earlier could have hit him. What can you do help prevent future collisions with motorcyclists?

The following are a few tips all car drivers should follow when sharing the roads with motorcycles:
1)Recognize the motorcyclist as a person, not as a vehicle – This helps to create more precaution when driving alongside motorcycles. Driving in a car, many people feel they are in a “safety box”, and tend to treat others as just vehicles rather than people.
2)Don't believe that all motorcycles can avoid all traffic -Just because motorcycles smaller and speedier vehicles, doesn't mean they can get out of all traffic situations.
3)If a motorcyclist has a turning signal on, don't assume he or she will turn - Even if a motorcyclist has a turning signal on, the switch does not automatically go off after the turn like in regular cars. So even after the turn, the light may not shut off.
4)Always assume there will be motorcycles on the road – Just because there aren't as many motorcycles as cars doesn't mean you shouldn't be concerned about them. Their small size can make it hard to determine their speed and distance, so always check for blind spots and traffic.
5)Brake lights may not come on for a motorcyclist that is slowing down or braking – Motorcycles slow down and brake differently than cars. As a result, their brake lights may not show up when they are slowing down.
6)If a motorcyclist moves between lanes, it does not mean they're sharing it with you - Motorcyclists continually adjust positions between lanes to increase visibility and avoid hazards.

If you are driving in Northern Virginia, more and more motorcyclists are hitting the road each year. By following these tips, you are helping make the road a better place for you and those motorcyclists.
