Hellboy 2 - A Successful Sequel

By:

2004's film Hellboy was an unlikely cinematic hit. Many thought that the story of the comic book created by artist Mike Mignola was too quirky and out there to make for a successful. But, acclaimed director Guillermo Del Toro was able to take the independent comic book hit and make a modest success with it. The film starred veteran make up actors Ron Perlman and Doug Jones, as well as more well known actors such as Selma Blair and Jeffrey Tambor.

The director told fans that if the first film proved successful enough, a second would be made. The sequel was announced soon after the first one, and for two years fans only had a title to go on. Hellboy 2: The Golden Army was the title, and just as it seemed preproduction was ready to start, Columbia pictures pulled the plug and abandoned the project. However, Universal Pictures swooped in and gave the franchise a new home. And now we have the anticipated sequel, and it is a great improvement over the first one.

Hellboy 2 shows our demonic hero (Ron Perlman) having relationship problems with his girlfriend Liz (Selma Blair) who has some big news that she is not ready to share with him yet. What is even worse is that an Elf prince wants to unleash an indestructible robotic army on the world to take it back from humans and give to the creatures that make up many of the world's fairy tales. It is up to Hellboy, Abe Sapien (Doug Jones), Liz, and new team addition Johan Krauss (Seth McFarlane) to stop the mad prince from destroying the world as we know it.

Director Del Toro follows up the tremendous success he had with his previous film, Pan's Labyrinth, with this movie, which while being less dramatic, makes up for it with shear entertainment. Each character is given a chance to grow and develop, with no one character being more than another. The special effects and make up in this film are highly imaginative and are definitely beautiful. The movie, however, is not without its plot holes, but this can be forgiven because the movie never feels boring. The film maintains its fun, even if there is not always action on the screen. The comedy is well timed, the action scenes are fun to watch, and the characters are likable, which is always a good formula for a successful movie.
