Plantar fasciitis is the medical term used for a syndrome of heel pain due to inflammation of the thick ligament of the base of the foot, which is called the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia becomes damaged due to biomechanical reasons or inappropriate running shoes, causing the tissue to become inflamed or even tear at the heel bone. Put simply, plantar fasciitis is heel pain after running, and the pain can eventually affect the hips, knees, and ankles of runners.

Apart from wearing inappropriate running shoes, pain can also arise when you carry the bad running posture. Bad running posture causes muscle imbalances and consequently, pain. Moreover, some people are simply not built for distance running. Successful runners are often observed as having a naturally lean and light-boned body structure. Other causes of pain include having tight leg muscles and doing too much high-impact exercise within a short period of time.

Plantar fasciitis causes pain during the toe off phase of the running cycle. This is because the muscle away from the heel bone is stretched. The condition may also result to plantar fascia rupture, wherein sudden intense pain in the heel area is felt. To manage this condition, you can initially apply ice pack onto the affected area. Doing so will help reduce swelling. Also, it may be necessary to reduce or to completely stop running. It will also help to do the plantar fascia stretch before running as this stretching exercise will help to prevent the injury from ever occurring again.

To perform the plantar fascia stretch, you should stand straight with your hands against a wall and your injured leg slightly behind your other leg. Keep your heels flat on the floor and slowly bend your knees. You will feel the stretch in the lower part of your leg. Hold this position for ten to fifteen seconds, and repeat the procedure six to eight times.

Plantar fasciitis can cause pain when walking or running, and lead to the formation of a heel spur. Heel pain after running can be prevented, though, with the right knowledge on stretching exercises.
