Healthy Living With The Acai Berry

The acai berry is a dark purple berry with a thick skin and pulp surrounding a large seed. The berry grows without any kind of cultivation in the tops of fast growing palm trees which dominate the Amazon river basin in Brazil. Locals harvest these berries and use them to make fruit pulp, which in turn can flavor a variety of different foods. For the fruit which won't be used immediately, it must be flash frozen in order to prevent the food from quickly spoiling.

Recently, researchers have discovered that the acai berries are a good source of antioxidants and nutrients called anthocyanins. This is same substance which can be found in red wine, and is generally why doctors encourage night caps. In addition to the antioxidant content, acai berries are rich in fiber and protein along with containing essential fatty acids and other vitamins such as vitamin A and B, Omega-3, and Omega-9. The acai berry gained an explosion of following after Dr. Perricone featured his findings on the Oprah Windfrey show. In his book titled the Perricone Promise, he describes the acai berry as being the most perfect food on the planet, rating the berry amount his top ten superfoods which are supposed to make a person both look and feel younger.

Because antioxidants are such an essential part of good health by helping us fight the deteriorating effects of aging and disease, they've been recognized as an essential part of our daily diet. Doctors and health experts are constantly pushing the benefits of consuming more antioxidants by eating more fruits such as blueberries and white tea. Because of all the acai berry hype, researchers have turned their attention to the acai berry and it's wealth of antioxidants to determine just how beneficial the berry is for human consumption. Three commercially available juice blends which contained an unspecificed percentage of acai juice were compared in vitro for their antioxidant capacities againt red wine, six types of fruit juice, and pomegranate juice, the current king of antioxidants in the juice world. The studies were completely blown away. Acai berry juice has more ORAC
value than that of pomegranate juice and the six other juices tested, including the red wine. Because of this, acai juice will likely find its way into doctors offices as being recommended for those who need more antioxidants in their diet.
