Are you having difficulty getting rid of head lice? According to scientists, up to 90% of today's head lice are resistant to common chemical treatments containing permethrin pyrethrins. As new generation of head lice have been born, a new generation of treatments are on the rise including alternative and natural treatments which are effective, and safe for the whole family's use.

Tea tree oil can be effective for treating headlice. The tea tree is native to Australia, and the oil is produces has both antifungal and vermicidal properties. Special lice-treating shampoos, conditioners and oils (all containing tea tree oil) can frequently be found at your local health food store.

Mayonnaise is fast becoming another alternative treatment for headlice. Mayonnaise, and other heavy oil-based substances are used to smother lice. This treatment involves the application of a large amount of mayonnaise to the scalp; which is then covered with a shower cap and allowed to sit overnight. In the morning, the dead lice and nits can be combed out and removed. Until all lice have been removed, this treatment may need to be repeated until desired results have been achieved.

There are many options for safe lice removal. One of the most effective is shaving the head. Lice need hair of a certain length to provide them with a conducive environment to grow and reproduce. And if the hair is just long enough to harbor lice, keeping it quite short makes it easier to treat with a lice comb. Having very short or shaved hair may be an acceptable style to children in today's fashion world.

Finally, a simple easy choice is just to repeatedly comb out the lice and nits from the child's head. You must repeat the treatment twice daily for up to two weeks, but no chemicals are required. Because it's so time intensive though, most parents do not choose this method first.

Alternative and herbal home remedies for head lice removal, while not the first choice for may people, are a safer and just more effective than commercial, chemical-based treatments. Chemical treatments allow headlice to become more resistant to the substances used and are not family-friendly.
