Head Lice Treatment: Which Methods Work?

By:

Nearly everyone fears the very thought of getting head lice. If chills run down your back when someone you know gets lice, getting them yourself can be downright terrifying. If this happens to you, however, you aren't alone. Head lice treatment can, in fact, be very simple. There are several different methods that will rid you of head lice for good.

Before you can treat hair lice, you need to determine whether you actually have an infection in the first place. Common symptoms of an infection include an itchy scalp (from the lice biting the scalp) and visible nits, or lice eggs. The nits generally resemble dandruff but are harder to dislodge.

If you have lice, you need a head lice treatment. Though various treatments exist, not all of them are thoroughly tested and/or scientifically proven. For best results, however, you are better off sticking to the tried-and-true methods that are luckily plenty.

One method of head lice treatment is simply to shave the entire head. Once all your hair is gone, the lice have nothing to cling to and will be less inclined to remain on your scalp. Of course, a shaved head might not appeal to your personal style. If this is the case, fret not. There are less drastic solutions.

Combing the hair for lice can be very effective. For this, you'll need to purchase a special lice comb. With this comb, you can remove both adult and young lice from the hair. Some combs allow you to remove nits as well. If you're combing your hair for lice, it is helpful to oil the comb beforehand to allow it to glide more easily through the hair.

Finally, you can use a chemical solution to kill the lice and their nits. The chemical permethrin is an effective head lice treatment, and is generally sold over the counter in lotions or shampoos. Prescription medicines are also available if the over the counter treatments are not strong enough. Note, however, that chemical treatments are discouraged for very young children.

Getting infected with head lice can be very frightening. As soon as you learn how to get rid of lice, this fear should abate. A proper head lice treatment should take care of the problem within a couple of weeks. After that, an occasional check to make sure the lice are still gone is all you'll need.
