Head Lice Still A Common Childhood Ailment

By:

Medical research has made great strides in the last century in curing most of the fatal diseases affecting the children. Deaths in children by mumps, measles or polio has been completely eradicated. However some common ailments like cold and head lice have no cure as of yet.

The human louse, which causes head live, is a tiny bug that survives on human blood. While it is similar to the ticks and fleas that infest animals, the louse can only prey upon humans, and can only live on sites that have hair. Therefore, humans are usually the victims of either pubic lice or head lice.

Children are more prone to contract lice ,not because of hygene but their life style involves making physical contacts with other chidrre n, like sharing hats, toys and even sometimes combs. Lice transfer themselves to human hain on the first opportunity and that is how lice spreads. Children in schools are exposed to a bigger gathering than at home and this is another cause for the spread of lice among the children than in the adults. Once we know the possible causes, we can prevent the spread of lice and be free of tension.

Just like common cold, lice can be easily treated and is a minor annoyance. There are many delousing shampoos available in the market. The shampoos on the regular application for few days kill the lice and prevent the eggs from hatching. You also have to comb the hair with a fine- tooth comb to remove lice eggs.

Many insects that feed off of blood, such as mosquitoes, are known for being carriers of disease. Lice are different. While they do make your scalp itch, lice are not known to carry blood-born diseases. Lice pose virtually no threat when it comes to transmitting viral infections.

People have been searching for ways to keep the lice at bay as they could be an annoying problem even after treating them. Schools and daycares are taking special measures and innovative steps to prevent the spread of lice among children. One such practice is that children are not allowed to nap by lying on mats on the floor. They are asked to keep their heads on their desk and nap with at least a foot of separation between the desks. Parents are also discouraging their children from sharing their hats, combs and putting other children's toys close to their heads. These practices will take a long way to help prevent the spread of lice.

Despite our best efforts, head lice will likely remain common, at least among children, so long as they are near each other. Even with modern sanitation and regular cleaning, since lice are only a minor nuisance, simple treatments will be considered fine by individuals and society. Head lice may only disappear one day if we choose to place an effort on their extinction as we did with smallpox and polio.
