Head lice is highly contagious, so it is very important to take the proper steps to getting rid of the problem. Treating head lice starts with a complete and thorough washing of all bedding materials including sheets, stuffed animals, pillowcases and blankets in extremely hot, soapy water. All materials which may have had contact with the person who has lice should be disinfected in ammonia or rubbing alcohol. This includes hair brushes, combs, hair bands, hats and barrettes.

When you first discover lice on your head or someone else's, you should go to your local drug store and buy a lice treatment shampoo. While you are washing and cleaning your sheets and other household items, you will want to shampoo your hair with the medicated shampoo. Because the adult louse can jump from head to head and quickly spreading its eggs, it is imperative to take these steps right away.

Shampoos can be effective in the treatment of head lice, but may require more than one treatment to eliminate the pest completely. Your doctor might prescribe a product, or you could ask your pharmacist for a recommendation, but these shampoos can be purchased over the counter as well. It takes some effort, but just follow the directions and you'll kill the lice.

Head lice can be difficult to get rid of. If you still find nits and/or lice after one week of using the shampoo, continue the shampoo and take further steps. Wash all of your bedding for a second time, and if you have carpets, have them steam cleaned. Persistent head lice infection may require a visit to your doctor, who may prescribe stronger medication or alternative methods for killing the lice both on your head and in your house.

Head lice and other types of lice are a common occurrence in all parts of the world. People who are affected should not be ashamed of their condition. Head lice and body lice are widely recognized. The people at greatest risk of contracting head lice and body lice include children who are in contact with other children, such as in schools.

Unlike some rumors, lice is not an indication that you or your family is more unhygienic than anyone else. All types of different people with various backgrounds get and have gotten lice. The only prevention against lice is to check yourself and your family regularly, refrain from sharing hats and combs and be diligent about keeping your laundry clean.
