Head Lice: Alternative Treatments That Really Work

You son or daughter has brought home something new from school - head lice. This article will explain how to copy with head lice and to get rid of them. In the last ten years, head lice have been developing a resistance to the most common chemical treatments, so we have some alternative methods to solve this problem.

The most often used alternative remedy for head lice is to cover the child's head with a thick oil or cream. Some good household products that work are mayonnaise, olive oil, or vegetable oil. Once the cream or oil is on, the head should be covered with a shower cap and left on overnight. The next morning the lice will have suffocated and can be combed out using a lice comb.

The oil, tea tree oil, is a great treatment. This unique oil comes from a tree that grows in Australia. Few know of all the wonderful benefits of the oil. Several companies manufacture products that contain tea tree oil. We suggest a conditioner for the hair that includes a high component of this oil. As when using mayonnaise, leave it on the hair overnight and then comb out the head lice in the morning.

Another safe treatment method suggested for treating children's head lice is with nutrition, using brewer's yeast and garlic. This method provides a palatable option for improving the skin and scalp, making it inhospitable to the head lice. This dietary change must be used with the physical combing of lice nits as well for complete treatment. The change may be only moderate with diet alone. Some research, in fact, is not conclusive on the effectiveness of the yeast and garlic method alone.

The manual treatment for removing head lice requires more manual labor but is effective and does not involve the use of potentially harmful chemicals. Just repeatedly and completely comb the child's hair looking for lice and nits. It should be done each day for fourteen days. Although the squeamish will not like this method it is effective. Best results are obtained on children with short hair.

Whether you decide to go with a traditional treatment, or choose an herbal, oil-based, or manual treatment, you can be assured that with time and patience, you can rid your home and child's head of head lice.
