The upside to having these two procedures done at the same time cuts pre-op, post-op recovery and surgery time in half. The downside is that recovery time and healing may take longer and may be a little more complicated. Having a tummy tuck and a hysterectomy may also reduce the financial burden down to having to pay for one operation, rather than two surgeries.

And knowing that your stomach will be flatter afterward can only give you a mental lift in the process.

In order to get this done, a woman must have the complete cooperation from the surgeon who is set to perform her hysterectomy, because there are some additional risks involved and some doctors don't want to add any more jeopardy to the scenario. In this case, the tummy tuck is the secondary procedure.

The biggest problem that may occur is finding a doctor who will willingly multitask like this. Some will, some won't. Worst case scenario is that you end up with two surgeons in the operating room working in tandem and simultaneously.

Prior to undergoing the procedures, and in addition to consulting with all doctors involved, it is very important to talk with your health insurance provider. Tummy tucks are almost never covered by insurance, since they are considered elective and cosmetic type surgeries.

Even when the costs are combined with the hysterectomy, the insurance company may balk at paying for any of the procedure, if you don't tell them upfront what is going to happen.

A woman needs to be aware that although she will only have to recover once, that one recovery will be more painful, more tiring with a much longer healing period because of the two procedure that were done. Tummy tucks by themselves are known to be very painful in the first few day after surgery. Patients are also known to suffer depression following a tummy tuck. Recovery from a hyterectomy is even harder and downright unbearable when you add in the sudden stoppage of hormones that comes with this kind of operation.

Over all, this combination procedure is doable with a little pre-op homework. Coordinating the procedures will take a little effort, with the understanding that the recovery will be worse than undergoing the tummy tuck and hysterectomy separately. Still the benefits of getting a two for one, cannot be counted. Piece of mind once they're over and recovery complete is the main thing to look forward to.
