Having A Concealed Weapon Permit: Go Through The Right Channels

By:

There have been a few times in my life when I have found myself in a scary situation where I was virtually unable to defend myself. While I was initially very in favor of strict gun control laws, I have had a profound change of heart.

While I certainly do not encourage the reckless dispersion of firearms, I do believe that the responsible ownership of a gun can be a preventative measure that is ideally never used. But in the event of a crisis, you may be the only one able to protect yourself, along with others around you.

The recent Virginia Tech tragedy is a prime example of what might happen when responsible citizens are restricted from carrying weapons. The one who broke the rules was able to go on a killing spree because others had no way to stop him in his tracks.

Now, I don't want to point my finger at anyone, but policies like these can create an overall vulnerability among any group of people. But regardless of any organization's policies, if you want to be able to carry a concealed firearm on your person, you will need what is called either a concealed weapon permit or a concealed weapon license.

In general, a permit is not difficult to obtain, and I am going to provide you with the typical course of action you must take. However, the procedures and laws often vary from state to state, so be sure to obtain more specific information from a reliable source about the details that apply to your region.

There are two different approaches that a state may take to issuing a license. One is a "may issue," state--in these states, you must not only meet specific requirements, but you must also submit a justification to be granted a license.

"Shall issue," states will issue a license to you once you have met their basic requirements, which may or may not require you to take a gun safety course, among other conditions.

Many states operate the dispensing of concealed weapon permits through their law enforcement offices. Contact a local sheriff's bureau to find out if you qualify for a license and then learn what steps you need to take in order to apply for one.

The majority of states will require that you take a safety class. A public university in my area offers these regularly, so you may want to begin your search at a university or community college.

Sometimes you must actually schedule an appointment with your local operating agency to fill out and submit your paperwork, but when my spouse applied for his permit, he was able to do that at the end of his safety course. Be aware that you will have to pay a fee and have your fingerprints taken.

Once you receive your permit, you must have it with you at all times when you are carrying a concealed firearm. It is best just to keep it in your wallet. When you carry your gun, keep it in a place where it is easily accessible but still well-hidden. A kydex holster that hooks onto your belt will work just fine.

Being able to carry a firearm is a big responsibility. Do not take it lightly. Be sure to go through all the proper channels, and always be careful. But also don't be afraid to use it when you need to.
