Have Your Corporate Branding Together Before Going Online

By:

One of the most important things in search engine optimization is you image, just as it is in "real world" business. In fact, you should have your image, or branding, planned out before you launch into Internet business. What we're talking about here is your corporate branding.

Many people, when they launch into Internet business, carelessly put their Internet branding together on the fly, or ignore it altogether. Of course, ignoring Internet branding is an image in its own right, and doesn't reflect well on the business. If the corporate branding is all figured out from the beginning, it shows professionalism.

First of all, what is corporate branding? It is a collection of elements that all together comprise the company's image. It is the company's name. It is the typeset that the name is advertised in. It's a logo, such as a letter, a symbol or a mascot. It's a slogan and a color scheme.

The essential elements of effective corporate branding are that it should be visually appealing and consistent in imagery. It should be unique but not irrelevant to your business. In short, it should effectively convey who you are.

All the elements of corporate branding should be geared towards differentiating your company from all the others. It should set you apart and implant an image in the customer's mind of who you are and what you do. This is consequently the first phase of building your reputation.

A study in ergonomics would be helpful in creating your corporate branding. That is, you can gain a more scientific knowledge in what colors, what shapes and what fonts are the most visually appealing and accurate for the image you want to create. There are actually college courses on the psychology of advertising.

All promotions and advertisements should be an extension of your corporate branding. You are, after all, being represented in these formats, so consistent images are important. Equally important, the mood of the advertisements should reflect your image.

As an extreme example of bad corporate branding, let's say that you have a company that sells birthday party supplies. If your image looks more like Halloween party supplies, you've missed the mark for everyone except maybe people that are born on Halloween. Even then, most people in that case are looking for birthday party supplies, so you will probably miss out on a great many of these customers too.

Your corporate branding can be as simple or as complex as you like. You can create it yourself, or you can hire a team of advertising specialists to create it for you. Once your corporate branding is together to your satisfaction, it can readily be translated into Internet branding.

Your Internet branding should differ as little as possible from your corporate branding. This is, after all, your company's identity. It only makes sense that you want to maintain the same image on the Internet as you do on your letterhead and products. Any and all variations on your theme had better be for a good reason.
