Have You Had Basement Water Damage More Than Once

By:

Are you one of the many people that use their basement to store things that you are not using at the moment, but do not or can not get rid of the stuff? Have you ever had your basement get water in it from somewhere and have a lot of things ruined because of it? Maybe you have had this happen more than once and it is really getting old having to go down there and clean up wet cardboard boxes and try to salvage the things that were inside of them. This is probably happening when it rains or snows and is more than likely coming in from the outside.

This is not that uncommon when you own an older home, but it is not unheard of even in a newer home. Cracks in your basement blocks or just seepage coming through because the blocks were never sealed correctly can allow water from outside to get inside. As long as there is a crack or proper sealing is not done, you will continue to have water get in when the weather is wet outside. This problem is aways made worse when the water or snow settles too close to the foundation of the home.

The first thing you need to do to prevent your belongings from becoming damaged again is get things up off of the floor. You can put in metal shelving, walls mounted shelves, or hooks. There are plenty of shelving systems available that would be appropriate to use in a basement that will keep items from getting wet in case of small flooding. Use plastic storage bins with lids to keep water out. They will help prevent moisture from accumulating inside. These plastic bins with lids can also keep out any rodents or insects that might be roaming around down there also.

After you have the floor completely cleaned up, you have to find where the water is coming in. You might be able to spot a crack in your foundation locks somewhere easily if it is big enough. It could be that you can buy the proper patching supplies and take care of it yourself. If you find a crack and fix it, the next time it rains you need to check and see if it did the job. If it did not, chances are there is another problem. This is the time to call in a professional water damage company to find it.

You could have a landscaping issue on the outside that needs to be fixed. Sometimes it can be necessary to dig out around the foundation blocks and apply sealer to keep water from seeping in. This will not likely be something you can do on your own, so you should get with your insurance company to find out what you are covered for.
