It may not be as bad as to have a new one put on, but it will require some work. Normally, when water is coming from the roof, it is attributed to some type of debris hitting the roof either in a storm or strong winds that penetrates a shingle or two.

When a small water leak starts underneath a shingle, the water will find itself running pretty much any where it decides to run. It can run down the side of rafters and all though out the insulation of the ceiling. Locating where the water is entering the attic should be done from the roof itself, this way you might can see the puncture of the shingle an know exactly where the water it entering.

Another way to locate the vicinity of the roof leak is to be inside the attic when it rains and watch for it there. If you know much about roofing, replacing a couple of shingles is not very hard to do, but if this leak has been present for a while, then you may have encountered some other problems like mold and mildew damage from the water and rotting wood and this may need to be looked at by a water damage company.
