Located on an island shaped like letter T, Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates. Although Abu Dhabi is a modern city with skyscrapers and other features of the latest developments, the city still retains some of the features that point back to the ancient city that draws a lot of cultural interest. Although the city is known for its oil reserves, it originally gained its fame because of the pearl industry. When you go to the harbor, you will see rows of dhows that were used for both fishing and pearl diving.

There are numerous attractions in the city.

Dhow Cruising

There are several islands scattered around Abu Dhabi and dhow cruising provides a perfect way of exploring them. You will also enjoy your time on the Gulf water as you sail in vessels designed in the old fashion way. However, the modern dhows feature some of the latest technologies, such as satellite navigation. The quality rest rooms will also give you an ideal environment for relaxing.

Al Maqtaa Fort

As you approach the Al Maqtaa Bridge, the old fort will come into view. Built more than 200 years ago, the Al Maqtaa Fort was used to keep a watchful eye on invading bandits that were frequent during those times. It has been renovated several times to preserve the city's history for posterity.

Bateen Shipyard

Whether you enjoy sailing on dhows or not, you will be able to see how these vessels are designed in the traditional way at Bateen Shipyard. Watch the skilled craftsmen at work on the wooden dhows that are used for both races and trading. They are friendly and will share some valuable information with you.

Heritage Village

The Heritage Village is situated at the center of the city at the Breakwater. You will learn about the country's past in this living museum, including lifestyles and traditions of the Bedouins and other local cultures. There are courtyard houses, workshops, ancient irrigation systems and tents at the village. You can also shop at the souvenir shops.

Old Airport Garden

At the end of the Breakwater, at the city's edge, is the Old Airport Garden, which offers a great environment for relaxation. The serene atmosphere and special views make this one of the best places to unwind. The landscape is simply breathtaking. There is a playground where children can have some fun. Apart from this, the Old Airport Garden has another interest as the world's largest flagpole.

Khalifa Park

Another special place for wonderful relaxation is the Khalifa Park, where you will have much fun. Both tourists and locals love to spend time here. Some of the facilities found here are a central meeting plaza, time tunnel ride, theme park, party hall, maritime museum, Grand Avenue, and an Amphitheatre, as well as a women and children's garden. There is also an Islamic garden and a mosque.

Other special attractions in Abu Dhabi include: Qasr al-Hosn, Sheikh Zayed Mosque and the Corniche.
