Have A Great Day Out In Weston Super Mare!

By:

Weston Super Mare and the surrounding areas are particularly lovely in the autumn time. But today I was going to experience something new which I had been saving for a fine day when I had some free time.

I have been promising myself this small treat for many months, in fact, since they built the new two mile woodland pathway through Kewstoke woods which was constructed in late winter and early spring of 2010.

I live next to a long sandy beach in a wonderful little village called Kewstoke which is just north of Weston Super Mare. The quickest way to get Kewstoke from Weston is by taking the coastal road which winds its way along the top of the cliffs and through the woods and is approximately 2 miles long.

The early October morning was warm and sunny without a puff of breeze. I soon started on the pathway next to the Castle restaurant and immediately started enjoying an aspect of the area I had never before seen.

The tide was right in and in the early autumn sunlight the deep blue coloured sea sparkled and glistened with life. I could see Cardiff which was approximately 10 miles away exceptionally clearly. In fact, it was so clear it seemed much closer today.

I had never taken this route through the woods before and found it very enjoyable as the leaves were starting to change colour ready for the autumn display and promised that they would be getting even more colourful over the next few weeks. At the southern end of the woods I re-emerged once again into full sunlight and as it was such a lovely day decided to walk all the way to the newly built Grand Pier half a mile further on.

I decided to stick to the seafront and walked past the old pier and then down the pathway which led me under the grand old Victorian hotels which stood proudly and looked out towards the small island of steep Holm which sat prominently a few miles out in the estuary. The pathway let me down to the Marine Lake where I crossed the ocean bridge which led me to Knightstone Island that gave me a wonderful view of the grand Pier. I then realised I hadn't passed anyone at all during this enjoyable walk and decided rather than walking back home, that I would enjoy the views from the vantage point of an open top bus.

As I sat for a few minutes and admired the structure of the Grand Pier I counted my blessings as not for the first time I acknowledged what a privileged place I lived as West Super Mare and the surrounding area is a fantastic place to visit and spend a holiday or short break, but a place which I get to enjoy almost every day of the year!
