Established in 1284 by Alauddin Khilji, Hauz Khas is an amalgamation of ancient, commercial and residential monuments. This recently renovated complex consists of an Islamic cemetery, an Islamic seminary known as Madrasa, six domed pavilions, the Tomb of Feroz Shah Tughlaq, a mosque and a water tank which is said to have served the inhabitants of Siri. All the pavilions of the complex have been built around a village known as Hauz Khas. Having been a part of Siri, Indias second medieval city, the village has a history that traces back to the 13th century of the reign of Delhi Sultanate.
The village, developed as an upper class commercial cum residential area during the 1980s, is studded with domed tombs of Muslim royalty. Presently the village includes numerous upscale boutiques, art galleries and restaurants and is a relatively expensive tourist area. Among the many attractions of the village is Hauz Khas Lake where ducks and swans glide swiftly.
A special show illustrating the historicity of the complex and the village is presented in the evenings. Whilst entrance to the complex is free, a nicely landscaped, lush park known as the Deer Park is located at the entry point of the tank. In addition to deer, guinea pigs, rabbits, peacocks and a variety of birds are spotted here. Heritage walks are organized in the village during the weekend, as part of an agenda to preserve Indias cultural and natural heritage. For the visitors intent on participating in these walks, it is necessary to register in advance.
Various other features are yet to be added to the area to enhance its appeal, including Indias first night bazaar by the name of Eco Night Bazaar, an open air theatre where folk dance performances and cultural fests will be held and an Ecofriendly shopping kiosk.
