Hatch Back Stand Off: Honda Jazz Vs Mazda2

Two little hot-hatches, and both are Japanese but, which one do you pick?

Well for starters the Mazda2 is the Best Car in the World as decided at The World Car of the Year awards 2008 - which suggests that there is no contest. However the little Honda Jazz has more than held its own in the competitive hatchback market.

The Jazz has also won some prestigious awards itself; it was twice awarded Top Gear's Car of the Year award - so now we have two award-winners to choose from as well.

The Jazz offers something that many people crave when searching for a practical hatchback - space, and for a supermini the Jazz has loads of it. The design team have cleverly made the Jazz extremely practical and with its 'magic folding seats' it offers plenty of interior room. Although if you're looking to buy a supermini there is only so much space you can expect in the first place - so in this case it is definitely an added bonus.

On the other hand the Mazda2 clearly lacks space in the boot department - although passengers in the cabin do have adequate space to travel in comfort.

Looks wise the new Mazda2 wins hands down - it has a much sportier and dynamic feel to it and is definitely more attractive. That is not to say the Honda is unattractive though - it is just more conservative and 'plain.' At the moment people seem to want a car that will make them stand out rather than fit in with the crowd which suggests that the bright green Mazda 2 will be the more popular of the two.

I also think that the Honda Jazz is aimed at an older audience - and if you remember previous Top Gear episodes you may recall Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May's mums all test driving superminis - one being the Jazz, which backs up this claim.

Both cars are also fairly cheap to run which will certainly be an attractive prospect in the current financial climate. The Mazda is also the cheaper of the two to buy which may sway your decision towards the best car in the world.

So, in terms of quality, reliability, performance, environment and running costs there really isn't much to split the two. If you don't have a preference over Honda's or Mazda's I guess the styling will probably swing it!
