Has Dc Lost Its Mind If They Lose Rights To Superman Films

By:

The newly formed DC Entertainment from Warner Bros. is set to house all of the characters and entertainment properties based on DC Comics characters. The company is to be used to spearhead both major characters and some of the lesser known characters into other media, but they seem to be completely ignoring their flagship character, Superman. The reason I say this is because despite a Supreme Court Judge stating that if a new Superman film was not filming by 2011, they could potentially lose the rights of the character to the Siegel family, the heirs of one of the original creators of the Man of Steel, the new President of DC Entertainment, Diane Nelson stated that there are currently no plans for a new Superman film.

I, for one, find this ridiculous. Of course this could be a load of bunk and is just a way to keep fanboys' minds off of it while they get something ready, but somehow this seems very unlikely. One would think that such a court order would be enough to spook DC into starting production immediately, especially when many notable writers, such as Mark Millar have gone on the record to say that they would love to write a film for the new film, but this must have fallen on deaf ears. It makes one wonder if Diane Nelson, a person who admits to having no background or familiarity with comic books or its fanbase, is qualified to be president of a company whose characters are embedded into Americana. At the same time, Nelson has credentials in Hollywood to back her up. She has been the one in charge of the Harry Potter movie franchise, and I am fairly certain that she never read those books, and look at how successful they have been. I am simply worried that Nelson is so far out of her element that she is going to heavily hinder the productions instead of helping them.

Now, I will say that DC Entertainment might still have a chance to bring a new Superman movie into production before the 2011 deadline, but it is still up in the air. We will just have to see what they do, but a fact is that if this does not happen, the Siegel family will gain the film rights and then can license those rights to any company, so if Warner Bros. wants to keep its biggest cash cow aside from the Potter franchise and Batman, it better get it in gear.
