Tucked away inside a secret valley, Haruru Falls is a gorgeous horseshoe shaped waterfall, in New Zealand's North Island. It is about three kilometres away from Paihia, a famous tourist town in the Bay of Islands. The first Maori river port was built here and the river served as an aramoana (or ocean path) for the tribes that lived inland. At the time a small Maori trading post operated in the area, and dozens of canoes would travel up the Waitangi River to exchange wares. While the trading post may no longer operate, the base of the waterfall is still a popular spot for swimming and kayaking.
To get to Haruru Falls, one can take the picturesque, mangrove lined walk from the Waitangi Treaty Ground. The rushing sounds of the water can be heard long before the waterfall comes into view. At barely five metres in height, the waterfall may not be very impressive, but it more than makes up for that with its breathtaking beauty. The falls are especially striking at night, when they are lit up by floodlights. Parks and recreational areas surround the falls, adding to its natural splendour and there are many terrific spots to have a picnic by the river.
Paihia is one of the biggest tourist towns in the country. Here tourists can swim with dolphins, hike through ancient forests and visit some of the nation's historic spots.
