The mention of London conjures up a flurry of mental images. Black taxis, royalty and stately buildings. There are few capitals in the world that are steeped with so much of history. While walking down many of London's streets it is easy to imagine yourself being transported to a different time. Many of the city's famed historical landmarks are remarkably well preserved, and have become popular tourist spots.
Undoubtedly, the English royal family has contributed many buildings to the local landscape. Their various residencies across town garner wide interest, with the most prominent ones such as Buckingham Palace, Tower of London and Westminster Abbey, being instantly recognisable globally. While the Hampton Court Palace cannot make a similar claim, it is still worth a visit.
It was initially built in the 15th century for Cardinal Wolsey on the orders of King Henry VII, but was reclaimed by the king when the cardinal fell out of favour. Over time the castle has been added to and enlarged, leading to its current appearance, influenced by two distinct architectural styles. Despite its 'accidental design' the castle still retains an elegant uniformity. While none of the royal family members have lived at the palace since the 18th century, it is home to many works of art belonging to the Royal Collection.
Today the castle is a prominent tourist attraction. Several exhibits inside aim to educate visitors on the life of King Henry VII, although as far as exhibits go, the Ghost family trail, which recounts the castles spooky history is more popular. The Chapel Royal, within the castle grounds, is another tourist favourite, with its magnificent altar and beautiful stained glass windows. Hampton Court is also home, to what is probably, the most famous maze in the world. The Hampton Court Maze spans almost a third of an acre and is immensely fun to explore.
Admission prices vary, and one can purchase tickets for particular exhibits or sections of the castle. The palace is located in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. It can be difficult for tourists to get around, after all London is such a large city. Choosing an accommodation in a central area can help a lot in that regard.
