Halogen Light Bulbs Are The Height Of Fashion

By:

For many years the ordinary tungsten light bulb was the mainstay of the luminaries, being used in most homes around the world. But with the ever increasing demand for brighter lights that last longer, General Electric of America developed with halogen lamp.

The halogen lamp was in itself a clever innovation of the 'normal' light bulb. The breakthrough came from two directions. One was the development of high temperature tungsten. Tungsten is unique in its incandescent quality. It is able to burn more brightly than any other metal when an electrical current is passed through, it enabling it to shine brightly. The problem is that eventually the tungsten filament would corrode, leading to loss of performance and eventual breakdown.

However, when halogen gas was introduced into the scenario, it enabled the filament to glow more brightly, but just as importantly, it created a chemical reaction that meant that a new layer of tungsten was constantly being added back onto the filament. This meant that the lifespan of the new halogen bulb could be significantly increased. Another problem though, was the fact that the longer it burned, the higher the temperature inside the bulb became; a more heat resistant material was needed for the glass.

The new material decided upon was quartz, or to be more exact, synthesised quartz called aka silica. The higher heat tolerance of the quasi quartz meant that the filament inside the new halogen lamps could continue to regenerate for longer. The only slight downside of the new quart casing was that it couldn't be touched by the naked hand because the natural grease that human skin secretes reacts with it causing it to crack and allow air to leak in.

One of the big advantages with halogen lamps is that the light they emit is much brighter, and whiter than ordinary tungsten light bulbs. An ordinary light bulb gives off a rather yellow light. It's all to do with the temperature of the filament, and thanks to the halogen gas, the halogen lamp runs hotter thus giving out a more powerful white hot light.

Another clear advantage that halogen light bulbs have other non halogen is the amount of light that they emit compared to their size. It is significantly greater than other lamps. This means that the lamps can be a lot more discrete and are easier to hide from view. Also the fact that they give out such an intense white light means that they are able to bring out the natural hue in many other colours, blue in particular.

The modern look of halogen light bulbs has also tended to make them into items of fashion. The hi-tech display industry uses them widely, as do shop interiors, and they appear very elegant when poised on the lighting tracks shining their light wherever they are angled. This has led to them being used in many kitchens giving them an ultra modern look.
