Hair Styles - Cut It Or Blow It

By:

Your hair style is a main point of identification regarding who you are and what you feel about yourself. People may rarely comment on a man's looks. It just does not come up that often in casual conversation. But if you change your hairstyle, especially if you change it dramatically, you can expect reactions from "There is something different about you" if the change is not so noticeable to "Have you lost your mind wearing a blue Mohawk to work?" if you went way over the top.

For most men, they stay in their comfort zone about their hair. They find a style that suits them and they rarely venture out much from that basic style. This could be a good or a bad thing depending if their choice of hair style was one that was appropriate for them in the first place. There are basically three shapes of the face that determine what type of hairstyle fits best.

They are the round or square face, the oval or long face and the triangular face. For a round face you want a hairstyle that does not emphasize the face in a horizontal direction. That means choose a hairstyle that does not create a circular pattern, for example avoid a big round afro. Choose a style that is more narrow and box like, close-cropped on the sides and of medium height.

The oval face is suitable for almost any hairstyle, but if the face is oval and long then choosing a hairstyle that is fuller on the top will take the emphasis away from the face length. If you have a triangular shaped face then choose a hairstyle that will decrease the width at the top, to create less of an emphasis on the width of the forehead and you may want to wear a beard to widen the chin area.

Once you have the basic styles chosen that work with your face shape, then you have endless variation within these styles. One thing for certain it that to maintain a good look you need to make fairly regular visits to the hairstylist for upkeep, especially if the style you have chosen is a short one. Another consideration is the ease of getting ready. Some prefer a wash and wear hairstyle, that requires minimal preparation to look good.

If that is your preference then your hairstyle will be short, and look good when you step out of the shower as well as when you simply let it air dry. If you chose a style that needs a little more prep, then you may have to equip yourself with a good hair gel of appropriate holding strength and use a blow dryer to get more body out of the hair style when needed.

The amount of prep time needed before you go out depends on whether you part your hair, comb it, or need to hold it in place with gel. Since your face and hair are often the most observed things about you, it is worth the effort to find a style that suits you and that you can take care of properly on a daily basis to maintain a good look.
