Decide on how you will learn:

You must decide on how you will learn to play the guitar. Will you be learning to play from a teacher or will you be learning through online instruction? This is important because both ways may affect how fast you are able to pick things up. If you decide to go the offline route make sure your teacher is a good one who has the virtue of patience.

That way when you run into problems youll be able to work through them without feeling like youre being pushed. If you are learning online make sure that everything is self paced so that you can go back and make adjustments if you dont understand something, this will enable you to move at whatever pace you want until you get it right so that you still arent confused when you begin to go on to some of the more advanced levels.

Making sure you understand the basics:

Whatever route you decide to go make sure your instructor is able to teach you the basics before you move forward. The basics are nothing more than understanding tuning and knowing what the tab board is, knowing how to use it and knowing how to get different sounds from your guitar.

A good instructor should be able to help you with this, but even if you go the online route you should be able to pick these things up. Taking the proper time to make sure you understand everything will stop you from giving up on learning.

Practicing with feedback:

Make sure you are able to get some feedback from whatever source you decide to use, even if it is some online software. You must be able to measure your progress if you hope to move on with your learning. If you practice without getting the proper feedback youll be learning the wrong way to do things and this will only cause you more frustration, so make sure you have a way of measuring just how well you are coming along.

Take all of these tips into account when you are deciding on what guitar instruction you will use. Remember that you must know how you plan to learn, you must understand the basics and you must be able to get the proper feedback on your lesson so that you are able to progress to the next level.
